How to Suffer
The presentation focuses on how Christians are to deal with suffering, drawing from 2 Corinthians 5:1-10. The central idea is that suffering is caused by sin, but God provides hope through the resurrection.
The presentation begins with an anecdote from Air Force basic training, where a failure to salute a base commander resulted in a two-week extension of basic training. Initially, this caused anger and disappointment, but later, it led to a better assignment and the realization that God uses suffering to guide individuals to His intended path.
Paul's teaching in 2 Corinthians corrects the Corinthian church's understanding of Greek dualism, which viewed the body as a prison to be escaped. Instead, Paul encourages believers to deal with suffering in three ways:
• Look to what is eternal: Our earthly bodies are fragile like temporary tents, but Christians are promised an eternal, glorified body, a solid "building from God". This perspective helps in enduring the "groaning" and burdens of this life, understanding that mortality will eventually be "swallowed up by life".
• Trust in what God is doing: God is actively preparing believers for their heavenly dwelling and has given the Holy Spirit as a "guarantee". This instills "good courage" and enables walking "by faith, not by sight," trusting in God's good character and sovereign plan even amidst hardships.
• Aim to please Him: The ultimate goal, whether in this body or with the Lord, is to please God. This involves embracing suffering as an opportunity for spiritual growth, magnifying Christ, and bearing witness to His worth, as exemplified by Chuck Colson and John Piper's response to cancer.
The presentation concludes by urging believers to honor Christ in suffering, not with apathy, and to reflect on Jesus' ultimate suffering on the cross for humanity's behalf, which brought forth salvation.
