Truth in a World of Noise

In a world constantly bombarded by influences and noise, this presentation emphasizes the critical need to discern truth from falsehood. Humans are created for community, but culture can easily lead to harmful beliefs, as evidenced by past acceptance of slavery or current trends affecting marriage. Since influences shape beliefs and behaviors, intentional discernment is crucial.

The presentation outlines three primary ways to know the truth:

1. Rely on God's Word: Jesus's teaching does not originate from Himself but from God, providing eternal truth unlike the shifting beliefs of culture. To truly rely on God's word, one must know it through "micro-reading" (deeply studying small sections), "macro-reading" (reading entire books for broader context), and "community reading" (discussing scripture in groups).

2. Reject the Counterfeit: Not all messages, even those from within the church, are true. Counterfeits often contain a kernel of truth but are distorted by self-serving motives or added human-made rules, like the Pharisees burdening the Sabbath with extra laws. Knowing God's word enables individuals to identify and reject these deceptive messages, which can be destructive if accepted.

3. Judge with Right Judgment: Jesus urged the Pharisees to look beyond appearances and judge spiritually, highlighting their hypocrisy in condemning His Sabbath healing while allowing circumcision on the Sabbath. Right judgment means recognizing God's reality, the truth of His ways, and His plan for humanity. Failing to judge rightly, as illustrated by the story of the Trojan Horse, can lead to severe consequences. This approach helps individuals withstand non-biblical influences.
