The Case for Jesus
This presentation on John 5:30-47 highlights that Jesus is the center of God's revelation, the source of true life, and the one all scripture points to. To thrive spiritually, everything must be re-centered around him. The presentation sets the scene in John chapter 5, where Jesus is defending himself against the Pharisees, who are indignant because he healed a man on the Sabbath and claimed equality with God. This interaction takes on the characteristics of a "legal trial".
Jesus presents four authoritative witnesses to his identity and divinity:
• John the Baptist bore witness to the truth, though the Pharisees only embraced John's message of repentance, not his testimony about Jesus as the Messiah.
• His works, such as healing the invalid who had suffered for 38 years, demonstrate that the Father has sent him to accomplish His will.
• The Father himself has borne witness about Jesus, though the Pharisees have never heard His voice or seen His form.
• The Scriptures testify about Jesus. Despite diligently searching the Scriptures, the Pharisees refuse to come to Jesus for eternal life, mistakenly thinking eternal life is found in the Scriptures themselves rather than in Christ, whom the Scriptures illuminate.
Jesus accuses the Pharisees of not truly knowing God and of seeking glory from people rather than from God, which leads them to reject the abundant evidence for his claims. He emphasizes that Moses, whom they revere, actually wrote about him.
For believers, understanding Jesus's divinity brings biblical peace amidst life's chaos, contrasting with the anxiety that results from placing hope in worldly things. This truth should compel Christians to re-center their lives on Jesus and share the message of his salvation with others, living transparently and vulnerably. While Scripture is highly esteemed as God's authoritative word, providing training and equipping, it is Jesus's work on the cross, received through repentance and confession, that provides salvation and a right relationship with God.
