A New Place to Worship
This presentation details the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, where Jesus reveals a "new place" to worship God. Initially, the woman, confronted with her sin, tries to change the subject to the historical debate about worship locations—Mount Gerizim for Samaritans versus Jerusalem for Jews. Jesus indulges her, but steers the conversation from a geographical "where" to the "person of the Father," emphasizing that worship will no longer be tied to a specific mountain or city. He highlights the importance of knowing "who" God is as the Father of all peoples, not just one group's ancestral deity.
The woman's understanding of God is incomplete; she "worships what she does not know" because Samaritans only accepted the first five books of the Old Testament, missing crucial prophecies about the Messiah. Jesus clarifies that "salvation is from the Jews" because they had the full revelation of God. He then explains that true worshippers will worship the Father "in spirit and truth". Worshiping "in spirit" means an internal, heartfelt engagement with God, unconfined by physical buildings or rituals. Because God is spirit and omnipresent, true worship can occur anywhere, originating from an engaged heart.
Worshiping "in truth" involves accurate knowledge of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Jesus explicitly declares, "I who speak to you am he," revealing himself as the Messiah. This revelation connects to the woman's existing knowledge from Deuteronomy 18 about a coming prophet. Significantly, Jesus chooses to reveal himself explicitly for the first time in scripture to this unfaithful Samaritan woman at the well—a place of shame for her—demonstrating that God meets individuals in their sin and shame. Ultimately, the new place of worship is in the heart and in the truth of Jesus Christ, offering a freely given connection with God as prophet, priest, and king.
