A New Healing

This presentation explores Jesus's declaration, "Behold I am making all things new," focusing this week on a "new healing" found in John 4:46-54. The passage describes Jesus's return to Cana in Galilee, where he previously turned water into wine, establishing his fame.

An official from Capernaum, about a two-day journey away, travels to Jesus because his son is "at the point of death". Despite his royal status and wealth, all medical options are exhausted, symbolizing how all people are at the point of eternal death without Christ. The official's personal journey to Jesus highlights the severity of the situation and his profound love for his son. This act mirrors God's personal presence in Jesus Christ, who came to us because our "sickness of sin was severe" and because of His love. This makes Jesus the "true and greater royal official," which is the core meaning of this second sign.

When the official asks Jesus to come heal his son, Jesus responds to the accompanying crowd, "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe". The official, however, calls Jesus "Lord," demonstrating a correct posture of submission and a focus on healing over spectacle. Jesus then tells the official, "Go your son will live," a command that facilitates healing by the power of his word, not physical presence, preventing the crowd from witnessing the miracle for entertainment. The official's actionable belief in Jesus's word proves his faith.

Upon his return, the official learns his son recovered "yesterday at the seventh hour"—a biblical number for completion. This revelation deepens his belief, leading his entire household to believe as well. The "new healing" found in Jesus Christ alone, through his personal presence and the power of his word, offers eternal life to all who believe.
