A New Fellowship: Deconstructing Community

The presentation emphasizes that Jesus Changes Everything and brings people into a new community. This is presented against the backdrop of a "broken and fractured world," a condition traced back to the Tower of Babel, where God scattered humanity due to their sin. Jesus, however, begins to gather and unite nations into this new fellowship.

The characteristics of this new fellowship include:

Focus on the Person and Work of Christ: John the Baptist directs his disciples to "Behold the Lamb of God," emphasizing that they should "look and live" by fixing their gaze on Jesus, who takes away the sin of the world. This focus requires turning away from self-centeredness, even if it comes at a personal cost, as John the Baptist willingly lost his followers to Jesus.

Follow in Faith to Discover the Destination: When Jesus asks "what are you seeking," the disciples respond by asking "where are you staying," indicating their desire to dwell with Him. Jesus invites them to "come and you will see," signifying a journey with Him (Emmanuel – God with us), where the fellowship begins with being with the person, not by reaching a specific place. Andrew exemplifies this by immediately bringing his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, showing that one doesn't need to have all answers before gathering others.

Flourish into Our Future: Jesus renames Simon to "Cephas" (Peter), a name representing his future identity, not his past. This illustrates that in the new fellowship, individuals are given a new name by Jesus, symbolizing their transformation and growth into who He intends them to be, separate from past failures or identities.

These themes are reiterated in the calling of Philip and Nathaniel, reinforcing the direct focus on Jesus, the call to "come and see," and Jesus' supernatural knowledge that brings Nathaniel to confess Him as the Son of God. Ultimately, Jesus reveals Himself as the "ladder" connecting Heaven and Earth, similar to Jacob's dream, signifying that the destination of this journey is the person of Jesus Christ himself.
